Thank you for sharing this Patrick! It's an excellent observation. I've noticed exactly what you're describing. It's really fascinating, despite how destructive it is when people who don't realize they're in a purity cult try to force its rules on you!

What would you say are some of the drivers/motives for people who otherwise live in one of the most free, progressive societies taking a turn toward Puritanism?

I think there is a group moral code similar to religious moral doctrine, and its being driven by cult leaders, many of which have financial incentives. The priests in the groups are the main drivers of excommunication too, by threatening dissenters. On the far left's doctrine, its mostly trans victimhood, apocalyptic beliefs about climate change, female victimhood over abortion, and several others. Its a strict adherence to a belief their moral authority is superior to other's moral authority. So anyone with differing views on these topics are seen as extreme moral blasphemers. They dont care if they lose the elections, because their moral code is more important than winning democratic elections. There is no compromise when everyone outside of your cult is seen as evil. On the right, you see more of a debate. For example there are both pro abortion and anti abortion republicans. They allow for more individualism. Individualism is not allowed in the woke cults.
